Everything you need to know to help you through the process
Holt Doctors have our doctors' careers in mind
Holt Doctors work hard to support our doctors and ensure that they receive the highest level of service. We have an experienced team that is dedicated to supporting our doctors with their revalidations, identifying their Responsible Officer (RO) and identifying their designated body (DB).
Our team also offers assistance with arranging our doctors' annual appraisals - with our doctors' career development in mind, our team only work with the best appraisers, who are highly experienced doctors, meaning that they get the best support from their appraisal process. At the head of this team is Holt Doctors' own Responsible Officer, Mr Jonathan Brooks.
Holt Doctors' Responsible Officer
Our Responsible Officer at Holt Doctors is Mr Jonathan Brooks, a highly experienced clinician who supports all doctors who have Holt as their Designated Body. Jonathan is here to support our doctors, maintaining medical standards and ensuring patient safety.
Jonathan has had an extensive medical career, he trained initially as a General Surgeon, and then in Gynaecology. His career has been varied spanning many years, not just in terms of these specialties, but also in terms of settings and locations. The combination of 26 years in the NHS, 18 years in Private Practice, research in North America and volunteer work in Uganda and India, means that he has a broad understanding of many medical settings across the world.
1. What to expect
Firstly, you will need to identify the designated body that will help you with revalidation. Typically, this is the organisation through which you do the most of your work, e.g. your hospital, GP practice or locum agency. If the majority of your work throughout the year is booked through Holt Doctors, we are potentially your designated body. If you think this is the case, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
For more information on how to identify your designated body, click here.
2. Arrange your annual appraisals
A Responsible Officer from your designated body will arrange annual appraisals which are based on the core guidance for doctors, set out in the Good Medical Practice (GMP). Appraisals focus on four main areas:
- Knowledge, skills and performance
- Safety and quality
- Communication, partnership and teamwork
- Maintaining trust
Essentially, the appraisal process is there to help you monitor your performance, evidence that you are up-to-date and fit to continue to practice, enable you to reflect on the supporting information you have collected (see below) and identify areas for practice development.
All of our appraisals are expected to be done with the MAG Model Appraisal Form, and we recommend that candidates having an independent appraisal for the first time view this preperation guide from NHS England.
Holt has a bank of quality approved Appraisers across the UK, and most are happy to do this via Skype too. Please contact our team at email@example.com for more info.
3. Collect Supporting Information
Once in every five year revalidation cycle you will need to collect Multi Source Feedback (MSF) from your patients and colleagues. We would suggest using a company called Edgcumbe 360 to do this on your behalf. Holt has negotiated a discount for this, as detailed in the table below, so please ensure you apply code HOLTDOC for either of the services offered.
Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
4. Engage in Continuing Professional Development & Quality Improvement Activity
Based on the feedback from your appraisals, as well as other information drawn from your designated body, every 5 years your Responsible Officer will make a recommendation to the GMC that your license should be revalidated.
There are certain requirements that are needed by the GMC for the revalidation process, one of the contributing factors is your quality improvement activity. Please visit this page from the GMC for further detail on this. Other resources for CPD collection are as follows: BMJ Learning, eMedicus, MDU, RSM, Royal Colleges, and doctors.net.
Finally, the GMC will carry out its own series of checks, after which your license will be revalidated and you will be able to continue to practice.
Anyone that works with Holt Doctors has access to the CPD loyalty scheme, and the points you earn from this can be used to cover some of the cost of your revalidation. More information can be found here.
If Holt Doctors is your designated body or for more information on revalidation, please email us at email@example.com.
