Where am I supposed to live, how do I get my visa, where do I even begin?

Plenty of our doctors have relocated to the UK - we know how confusing this process can be!
We've pulled together a 4 step guide to working in the UK. We hope this answers all your queries, but if you need more advice you can contact our team at international@holtdoctors.co.uk or on 0208 099 6947.

Step 2 - Let Us Get You UK Ready

GMC Registration

There are various routes to GMC registration, depending on what primary medical and post-graduate qualifications you currently hold. The most common routes are:

  • Passing the PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 examinations.
  • Automatic recognition of EEA Qualifications.

For more information on the various routes available, check out the GMC’s ‘Find Your Route’ guide.

With regards to coronavirus, the GMC are following advice from the UK government and have restarted PLAB 2 from 13th August 2020.
Please visit this page for further information.

EPIC Verifications

As part of the GMC registration process, you will need to have your primary medical qualification and any relevant post-graduate qualifications verified by the Electronic Portfolio of International Credential (EPIC).

Once you set up your account and upload the required qualification, EPIC will liaise with the awarding bodies to confirm their authenticity.

You will be given an EPIC ID which you will need to provide to the GMC when you complete your application.

The EPIC process can take up to 90 days to complete, so should be started as early on in the process as possible.

English Language Testing

When you register with the GMC, you will need to demonstrate your English Language knowledge.

This can be achieved in one of the following ways:

  • Having completed your Primary Medical Qualification less than 2 years ago, being taught and examined solely in English.

You may be able to gain GMC registration without a licence to practice if you are unable to show evidence of your knowledge of English at the time of application – you cannot practice as a doctor in the UK with this type of registration.

Step 3 - We Take Care of Your New Job

  • We work closely with a number of trusts across the country, and can make applications directly to these trusts for you.
  • Even if a trust isn’t currently advertising a role suitable for you, we can speak to them about any gaps they might have coming up.
  • If you see a job on NHS Jobs, we can make a direct application to the hospital for you as we have contacts in medical staffing at most trusts.
  • We are the preferred supplier in a number of trusts, and get access to jobs before other agencies.

  • If a trust is interested in you, we can arrange a phone conversation with the department straight away – this gives you an opportunity to find out more about the role and the people.
  • Skype interviews can take place within 2 weeks of a trust receiving your CV from us, subject to clinical lead availability – we liaise with the trust for you to arrange this, all you have to do is log-in to Skype on the day.
  • Once you have interviewed with a trust, we will speak to them for feedback – an outcome is usually received within 24 hours of interview.

  • Congratulations on your successful interview(s) – now we make sure that the offer of employment from the trust is right for you.
  • We highlight your overseas experience, and try to ensure that this is considered when a salary is decided upon.
  • If there is anything in your offer that you are not completely happy with, we liaise with the trust to negotiate the best deal for you.
  • If you have more than one offer, we can help you look at them objectively and advise on which role offers more of what you are looking for.

  • If you require visa sponsorship, we arrange for you to work with our visa specialist who will oversee the process and provide valuable guidance & assistance.
  • We connect you with a relocation specialist who will work with you to get you and your family settled into your new region.
  • We have a ‘Relocation Checklist’ which offers guidance on some of the easily overlooked element of moving to a new area, ensuring that nothing gets forgotten.
